Lawn mowing – 6 tips on how to mow your lawn properly

I don’t need to tell you that a healthy lawn needs to be maintained permanently. It’s much more exciting: HOW does a lawn need to be cared for? Lawn mowing is definitely one of the forefront when it comes to lawn care.

Today, I would like to take you with me and give you some hints on how to mow your lawn so that it always comes along in a strong green and announce the battle to moss with all the power of nature.

  • What do I need to mow the lawn?
  • When is the best time to mow my lawn?

As you have already learned in our last article about sowing the lawn, the right time will of course determine the success of a beautiful lawn here too.

If you have already laid the foundation stone and watered your lawn properly and fertilized regularly, then mowing the lawn will come into the play.

The art of controlled trimming the lawn is to demand it as best as possible, but not to overstrain it on the same move. By cutting off the lawn plants regularly when mowing lawns, you ensure that they grow back vigorously and that growth makes plants ever stronger.

This phenomenon can be compared to beard growth: At the beginning, delicate hairs grow, which are grown into real stubble with regular shaving. This principle is also used when mowing the lawn.

Why shouldn’t you overstrain the lawn?

If you mow your lawn too short, the lawn plants need immense effort to grow further. Weeds and moss are happy to take advantage of this situation in order to displace the already weakened plants and to spread themselves.

Basically, the lawn should not be mowed in winter. Only when the first If the sun’s rays come out and the temperatures rise, the lawn will also return to old activity.

As a rule of thumb, the first lawn mowing can be done in April . Mowing too early can overstrain the lawn (see above), but a first cut too late ensures that weeds can spread.

In general, it can be said that in high season, a lawn should be mowed 1-2 times a week as possible (depending on climatic conditions, fertilizing behavior and intensity of irrigation, for example).

The last step of the lawn is carried out around the end of October/beginning of November to prepare the lawn for autumn.

Tip: Remember to sharpen the lawn mower’s knife regularly (whether electric or petrol lawnmowers). Only a sharp knife can you achieve optimal cutting results.

Now there are a few more questions that I would like to take a closer look at the following:

When should you mow the lawn for the first time after sowing?

Regular lawn mowing ensures a smooth and healthy lawn Grow the lawn to 7-8 cm before mowing for the first time so that the roots already have the necessary stability and the lawn becomes nice and dense. It is also very important that you start slowly on the first cut and mow at the highest level.

Then gradually lower the steps until you reach the desired lawn height.

Ideally, cut a decorative lawn to about 2.4 – 4 cm and a playing lawn to 3 – 4.5 cm. If you cut the lawn too hard, growth may stall—as a rule of thumb, you can mow 1/3 of the lawn height safely.

In addition to the death of lawn plants, too short a cut can also lead to uncontrolled Tilt side shoots. This in turn results in a very uneven lawn with many gaps and low kick resistance.

If you leave the grass too high, you lack a certain challenge for the lawn to grow higher and the lawn plants lose their strength.

What weather should you mow your lawn in?

It is best to choose a dry day when the grass and soil are as dry as possible for mowing the lawn. The advantage of this is that the lawn is not attached to the Knife stays stuck and the lawn mower can cut the plants cleanly. It also ensures that you can catch as many blades of grass as possible and that no one has fallen over due to the wet and lies on the floor.

All this promotes an even cut, which is a prerequisite for a visually beautiful lawn.

Ideally, do not mow your lawn in the blazing midday sun. It is better to shift this activity to the evening — you can then water the freshly cut lawn comfortably and have done the gardening in one go.

When should you mow your lawn after fertilizing?

I have already described above that regular fertilizing can help the lawn grow healthy and fast. Of course, this also means that you have to mow the lawn more frequently. Immediately after fertilizing, it may happen that you should no longer just mow 1-2 times lawn per week, but 2-3 x if necessary.

The advantage here is that a dense lawn that is mowed regularly is also less susceptible to moss and weeds. And that’s ultimately the goal of every lawn lover.

In midsummer, you can grow the lawn a little longer, which allows the green carpet to retain more moisture and burn less quickly in the heat.

What do you need to consider when caring for lawn in autumn and winter?

You can also leave the lawn a little longer in winter. Here, many close-fitting blades of grass ensure that they are not so susceptible to snow and frost.

When the year is coming to an end, the frequency of lawn mowing can be significantly reduced. The last time the lawn should be cut just before the first frost — then you no longer need to mow and shouldn’t do so anymore.

In front of this through nature you can add a little autumn or winter fertilizer to your lawn so that it can fall into “hibernation” strengthened. This fertilizer again helps to reduce brown or bald spots due to a harsh winter.

Tip: Try to enter the lawn as little as possible in winter, frozen blades of grass break off quickly.

When are you allowed to mow the lawn and what rest periods are there?

In summer, when the lawn is to be mowed twice a week, there are often discrepancies between neighbors — especially when a neighbor does not adhere to the rest periods when mowing the lawn.

For neighbourhood peace, be careful not to mow on Sundays or holidays. Even on a late summer evening, your neighbors may want to spend their free time on the terrace and not listen to noisy lawnmowers next door.

Currently working Hobby gardeners often evade the evening hours to maintain their lawn. Theoretically no problem as long as you can finish the work by 7 pm. In the morning, early risers can start mowing from 7 a.m.

You can find more information on this topic here: Lawn mowing rest periods — when can I mow my lawn?

What can you do with lawn cutting or where can you dispose of it?

Before you dispose of lawn cuttings in the organic bin, you can distribute it on your beds as a fertilizer.

This thinly applied layer on the beds ensures that weeds underneath are destroyed and returns valuable nutrients to the soil in the subsequent process of rotting.

However, if you don’t have beds in your garden, then the organic bin is a good option to dispose of the lawn pruning. Alternatively, you can compost. After rotting you get the finest soil from the compost that can be used anywhere — a very cost-effective way to process biological waste.
